McDonalds Gets New “Maccas” Nickname for Australia Day

In honour of this month containing the Australia Day holiday, 13 McDonalds restaurants around the country will change the signage of the name to Maccas and roll out a series of promtions to highlight it including the above commercial. It's a nod to the Aussie way of life and habit of shortening most names into shorter simpler nicknames. Apparently over 55% of Aussies use this particular nickname for the fast food restaurant.

Australia is the only country to have given McDonalds this nickname and is the only one getting this special treatment.

"We've been a part of Australia for over 40 years now and we're incredibly proud to embrace our 'Australian-only' nickname," said Mark Lollback, chief marketing officer for McDonald's Australia. "What better way to show Aussies how proud we are to be a part of the Australian community than by changing our store signs to the name the community has given us?"

McDonalds has also submitted the word to the Maquarie Dictionary to be considered for their next update. The signs will remain up from early in January through until the first week of February.

As true blue Aussies (and fans of Maccas' tasty chips) Corporate Sound stands behind this smart marketing move for the giant restaurateur. It's a great way to encourage loyalty and for them to identify with their customers.
