Website Audio: The Right Way

In the past, an audio production could take up a significant amount of bandwidth making a website slower; most annoyingly though, many websites incorporated the auto-play feature. So when a visitor would visit a page, the audio would automatically start playing – not great for those surfing the web at work or in a quiet place.

However, in modern days, website audio can be quite an effective way to draw your customers in, providing you do it correctly. Audio shouldn’t take up too much bandwidth, and if you get a professional production, your production company should provide you an audio advertisement in a format that is appropriate, in a size that fits (so to speak).

And whilst we are not huge fans of auto-play website audio, we don’t necessarily think it is wrong for every website – just most. Obviously, if you are a company like ours, or a musician for instance, then it makes sense to have audio playing in order to sell your product, and providing your audio is set up in a way your visitors can pause or turn down, then there really is nothing wrong with having an auto-play set up.

For most businesses however, we would recommend giving your customers the option as to whether or not they want to listen to your website audio. With the use of some good graphics and compelling copy, you should get them clicking on the play button 95% of the time anyway.

That is the key to successful website audio: promoting the fact that you have an audio production on your website with graphics and copy and then giving your customers control over the audio (turning it up, pressing pause, rewinding etc).

Think about it, YouTube is one of the most popular websites online. Instagram has now introduced video uploads – and in most cases, video comes with audio. People are not only watching but they are listening … do you have message worth talking about?
