Knowing who your Customers Are

Understanding your CustomersWouldn’t it be nice if you could start a company and the need or desire for your product or service was for everyone? In the real world however, not every single person is your customer, and whilst many businesses understand this philosophy, it’s amazing how many of them do not.

By identifying who your customers are, you are then able to determine what really interests them, and what marketing channels they are tapping into. Smart brands don’t necessarily think big; rather they think smart and target customers who may actually be interested in what they have to offer.

Look at any successful company and you will see that most of them have clearly positioned themselves and understand the market they need to target. Start small, and once you have really mastered one market, and if there is still a chance to conquer another, then you can grow, but if you are a small business starting out, it is really important that you don’t get lost. You could potentially waste thousands of dollars on trying to get in the faces of people who just aren’t going to be interested in what you have to offer.

Instead use your resources to its full advantage and focus on ‘your’ customers. By determining the following, you will be able to develop a much more strategic marketing strategy.

  • What age group is your demographic?
  • Are you products / services gender specific?
  • What marketing channels do they regularly tap into (TV, radio, print, online etc)
  • Are they cashed up?
  • What are they synergies between your product and your customers?

Knowing who exactly are your customers will not only help you market your product / service, but it will help you develop and fine-tune your operations. Smart small businesses that have this understanding about their businesses are far more likely to succeed than those businesses what do not.
